Vinyl top removal, finding some parts for my car
Vinyl top removal, finding some parts for my car
Alright, so first off, I have lived with the vinyl top as long as I can, and I cannot stand it anymore. I started peeling it earlier today, amazingly the car is painted underneath, though I'll have to get a friend to do some finishing work to the pillars. I did find a little bit of rust on the drivers side A pillar, it's a very small hole that was actually hiding under the rain gutter, not the vinyl. That is easily fixed, but I'm hoping I don't find some horrors under the vinyl.
So, first question, my car has glue and fur now, how on earth do I remove this? A google search revealed no solid answer, some said chemicals, some said heat, some said scraping, some said sanding. I do not intend to restore the car back to being a vinyl top, although I don't want to break out my fathers DA sander unless I have too either.
Furthermore, where can I get replacement clips for the chrome around the windows? They seem to sink into the seals around the glass. And what paint would you recommend throwing up there just to seal it from rusting until I can repaint the car at some later date?
Also, how do I remove the rain gutter above the doors? I can't seem to find clips or anything.
Now, onto the other questions, would any forum members fairly close to Roanoke VA happen to have a drivers side door, passengers side fender, or trunk lid for this car? My trunk lid is warped and has a couple upwards dings in it where one of the PO's slammed it on something, my drivers side door has a hole I can see day light through when it's open, and my passengers side fender has two or three holes rusted in it, one is up on the fender well arch, it use to hide under the chrome.
And, lastly, interior, know of anyone who sells carpet? I can find most of the panels I need that are busted, but again, if you have parts, a 77-89 Oldsmobile Delta 88, 98, or Custom Cruiser dash, kick panels, door panels, ect, tell me.
Alternatively, if you have a parts car around here, 77-79 delta, give me a shout, I can't buy it right off but it won't take too long for me to get up the money. I will be posting a listed in the wanted section for this.
I already have plans for what I'm gonna do when I paint the car, but that'll have to wait until later, you'll just have to wait and see.

Finished getting the vinyl top off today, still would like advice on removing the glue that's left behind. I'm worried about using solvents 'cause I don't want to eat up my window seals. I only reattached the drip rail on the drivers side, will pop the pass side one on tomorrow, I'll also put some of the trim back where I can remove any fuzz or glue left that will be in sight. I've still got a small strip at the base of the rear window to remove, that alone has three times the glue of the roof, which is amazing, 'cause the entire underside of the vinyl had glue.
I'm still debating on leaving the car gold, the factory color underneath is much lighter than the paint on the car now.
