Heater deleted
Heater deleted
Can anyone give me an opinion on what I should do to get my former a/c car now drag car back on the road with atleast a heater/defrost unit? I've seen vintage air units but I'd like some input thanks.
Your biggest concern is what was done to the hole in the firewall for the HVAC box? The A/C firewall hole is larger than the one for heater-only cars, so unless you plan to weld in new metal, you're stuck using the A/C HVAC box. If you don't plan to run A/C, you can get an aftermarket "A/C delete" box that covers the hole but eliminates the A/C evaporator, making the box smaller. You still need to use the stock A/C box under the dash and the A/C dash controls, including the vacuum activated flapper doors.
If you want to convert to a factory style heat/defrost only, you'll need to weld up or otherwise cover the A/C hole in the firewall, cut a new hole that's the correct size for heat-only, and install all the heat-only parts on both sides of the firewall.

Could you get one of these under the dash?

Dimensions don't seem too bad.

If all your duct work and controls are gone you could use a VA unit. All the hoses are run threw the old fan hole under the fender. You will have to fab up a way to mount the unit to the firewall. If you weld the mounting plate to the firewall that should work, that's what I was going to do but I went in a different diffection. I wonder if VA makes a heat only unit if you don't want the A/C. Here's how I did mine.
Thanks! I would definitely go with a VA unit then. Some guys have said that the heat isn't quite as good as the factory unit, but I don't think its bad.
The only thing I've noticed is that its a little loud. The fan is in the passenger compartment now instead of outside on the firewall, so the fan noise is a little loud. But that don't matter as long as you have heat.
