How does one remove the stainless piece from the top of the windshield? Are there clips holding it on, or just a bunch of glue? Perhaps a special tool is required? 71 convertible is car in question.

 

Clips. Just be careful and you'll be fine. You will most likely want to have new clips handy as they tend to break.

 

Need a little a little more specifics. Are the clips metal/plastic? Do I lift the piece upward while removing, etc. Trying not to bend the piece. Thanks.

 

They are metal clips. And pull up from the bottom easily working it and it will come loose.

Convertibles use clips on top?
I've really never looked and I have one.
Stuck up on the lift so I can't look, '68 may be different anyway.

The correct way to remove trim that is held on with trim clips is with a trim clip tool. They can be found at almost any parts store.

There are different kinds but they all do the same thing.
This one need some duct tape on it to keep it from scratching the glass and to keep it from chipping the paint under the trim when you pry on the clip.

Thanks. Still having a great deal of diffficulty getting this piece to even budge. Maybe this tool will help. Is it inserted from the top or bottom?

 

You need to slide the tool under the trim along the bottom between the glass and trim.when you feel the clip gently push up on the center of the clip and tilt the trim up untill it cleares the bottom of the clip. I think there are about 6 clips spaced along the full length. You may have to remove one piller trim piece to pull the top trim if you cant slide it out on the end.
Take your time and it should be pretty evident how it comes out once you get the first clip.

Sorry I was going from memory while I was at work which I guess isnt such a good thing anymore. I checked when I got home and you dont push on the clip you pull on it and lift the trim away at the top. Here are some pictures that might help

Thank you for posting the pics, I appreciate your time and effort. Unfortunately, I was a little "rough" with the stainless piece and have rendered it unuseable. Had to purchase one from Ron Memmer in Indiana (no one else had one for a convertible and the part is not sold as new ) and do overnight shipping. Now, if I can just avoid destroying this one while putting it on I'll be good to go. By the way, for those of you who know Ron, he did me a huge favor. Boxed the part up in half an hour for Fed Ex to come pick it up, and paid for everything himself up front, trusting me to mail him a check for the part and shipping next week. Good old Ron, been dealing with him for 14 years and he's always been very helpful.

 

putting it on is not hard at all. just put it in place and push down on the spot where each clip is and it will snap in place. for Ron, i have no idea where he comes up with some of the parts he has. he has some of the most rare parts in the world. and i don't like to use the word rare. he just sold a NOS 67 rallye pac. i hate to see what that went for.
