have a 72 Cutlass Convertible. Replacing body bushings and found significant rust where the wheel wells and trunk pan come together. If looking at the tire, the rust in from about 1 to 3 o'clock runs about 8-10 inches and .5 inch wide. Do I need to do replace the entire pan or is there any way to patch?

Need a pic to tell you what needs to be replaced. You can buy trunk replacement panels so wouldn't have to replace the whole trunk floor unless it need it.

 

Sounds like the rather typcial lower rear quarter /trunk rust and proper fitting can be a bit of a bear. X2 on the pics. But I would say replace off hand.

 

this is the worse side. Looking at it more, looks like I need to do the trunk pan but any way to patch the fender wheel that is rusted also?

I'll give you my 2c opinion.
I'm not a big fan of the 3 piece trunk floor repair kit, but sometimes you need to use them, you may be able to use a portion of it and save some of your trunk. I'm not a big fan of replacing huge amounts of good original metal, but sometimes you have to do it. It's impossible to know until you fully investigate it, I've had alot of cars with the damage shown in the pics and was able to bend and form my own repair panels. A good body man will be able to repair the rusted area inside the wheelhouse as well as the area in the trunk around the wheelhouse but if rust has spread beyond those areas plan on a new trunk floor.

What about the 1 piece trunk kit on yearone.come? My trunk bottom also needs to be replaced. I'm just not sure how much of it. I am in japan on a 10 month deployment but will be home in 4 days to do some more loooking in the trunk.

 

Make sure it is a full piece. Years ago the full size trunk pans were a little short on the sides.

 

We just did this on my sons Chevelle.It is not as easy as you think, and the one piece replacement, did not line up good. It took us al long time to do, and had to change, a lot to make it match the original trunk. So what I would say, is if you only have a little bad area, just replace it, not the hole trunk, even if you have to buy a complete trunk replacement, only replace what you need to. Also if you replace the hole trunk bottom, you will not believe how many spot weld holds it in place.
