What the deuce is this for?
I have this round indentation at the top of the door by the vent window on the passenger side. At first I thought it was a reference spot for mounting a mirror but it's too high on the door. Anyone know what it's purpose is? Sorry for the poor quality pics in advance.
Trip,
Can't tell from the pics what kind of car, but did it have a belt line molding (like the B85 on 70-72 Cutlass) here at any time? And is there similar marks on the back or other sides? If that's not it, I'm going to say someone probably whacked it with something...

Ok, here's another long shot. Could it be for an antenna mount? Far as I know most antennas were on the front fender. My first instinct though is to go with mirror placement.
Any chance you could ask the PO if he might have started drilling for an aftermarket mirror and decided it wouldn't go? The location is weird for a mirror, but it would fit on that ledge woudn't it? The DS mirror is just back of the vent window and I'm thinking it was a template screwup.

Had another totally loopy thought about this. Is there any chance that this door is not original to the car? I don't mean that it was replaced last week with a door from a parts car. I mean that maybe it was replaced back in the day. Maybe the original owner got hit in the door in 1967, and the aftermarket door that was used as the replacement had this dimple in it.
Were there aftermarket sources of collision parts back then? Or did everything come from the factory? I would think that there would be aftermarket suppliers, at least for a while until the car got too old. But if it is an aftermarket door, maybe that dimple is on the mold from which the stamping was made.
Just a guess.

Thanks for the replies but I'm stumped as well. I suppose it could be a replacement door but I have no way of knowing or finding out. That space is not wide, maybe 3/4-1" max so I doubt it is for a mirror. I would think they would have tried to make it at least symmetrical to match the drivers side which is adjustable from inside the car and fits on the lower part of the upper door. You're right Jaunty it is perfectly round, nothing like if someone had stamped it. It sure looks factory. Just wondering if any other 66-67 Cutlass owners have something like this?
[QUOTE=jaunty75;330023]Heck, the photos are so out of focus, you can't tell anything from the pics!
Remember, when you get up close to something, put the camera in "macro" mode. It's usually a little flower symbol.
