Hey guys,
I am about to start some rust repair on my 64 cutlass. I do have a friend that is going to hep teach me. I need to do the front and rear windshield channels, and some parts of the trunk gasket area. after that iv'e got a few dents and some previous bondo repair.
So I've got about 800$ saved up for some metal working tools. I've got a decent compressor, a plasma cutter, and a hobart 140 mig with gas.
Im a bit unsure where is the best place to start with tools to get me going..
Im thinking of the northern tool 3 in 1 brake and shear, and maybe the eastwood shrinker stretcher combo. I also need to get the smaller .024 ? rollers for my mig and the smaller wire. I try not to buy HF after I had to get stitches through the top of my thumbnail from one of their easy-outs...
I hadn't thought much of it, but are there any good DVDs out there that are worth getting?
thanks for any input or your experiences with getting into this.
Matt

I suppose you'll do mostly butt welds, but maybe a flanger? I see you are all ready thinking about wire. You got a decent welding helmet too I hope.
I might suggest youtube, you just never know what you might find for lessons er...ideas.

I would buy a grinder 10" pad and the small angle grinder with a 2 " pad a grinder with the 3" cutting wheel and sanders if you don't already have them
Edit: I would look up therobski "granny 64 build "thread and my "kids helping with projects "

Just as information, a friend of mine bought a shrinker/stretcher from eastwood, and was highly disappointed. I went over to help him learn how to use it, and I thought it should have been a little better for the money. I'm not even sure what brand mine is, because it was my Dads and is old, but it is much heavier duty. It might be ok if you are only going to bend a little channel once in a while, but it wont make a nice tight bend like mine will.
