Template question...

Is there a template available for the trunk lettering on a '72 Supreme? Thinking about putting them on mine, and if I'm gonna drill holes, I need them to be right.

Dave, a lot of people have asked that question. I think there's a thread somewhere on CO about it. Your car is a 72 isn't it? They came standard with letters on the decklid.

Can you just clip off the studs and double sticky 3M tape them on? Won't have to jack around with drilling holes. One mess up with drilling and you'd be filling and doing it over. Plus repainting the trunklid. Depends on if you are going for 100 point restoration or not.

If a PO removed the letters, chances are the holes are welded or filled with body filler. I like the idea ^^^. That's what I'd do, and it's really easy to position letters with tape before taking off the backing from molding tape. Either that or just leave the letters off. Do you have the letters or just thinking about getting them?

I have a set of letters that I'm going to use on a promo board for my car when I'm at car shows.

I am not seeing how you would use tape without trimming it around the contours of each letter. I think I'd try drilling holes before attempting that!

Years ago I made a template off an old deck lid using butcher paper and shading the deck lid edges and the letter holes with a pencil. Even with that homemade template, I never got the courage to try and precisely drill 20 holes so the letters would be perfectly aligned. Just one hole off a bit and it would look like crap.

I thought about clipping off the studs, but if they're the same size as the ones on the fender scripts, and given the size of the letters, it could be a daunting task🤔🙄😲

Trust me, 3M tape isn't the most forgiving when it comes to trimming...very cumbersome, so I'm with you on that. If anything, I'll use the adhesive I used on my fender scripts.

I don't have the letters yet Allan...was just kicking around the idea and getting some feedback on the easiest and most efficient way.

Kenneth, that's exactly why cutting the posts off and using body tape would be the best approach. I looked and can't find anywhere that shows the drill locations. A good sharp exacto knife with thin body tape is surprisingly easy to use.

Dave, the studs on those letters is actually quite small and thin.

As I said, I have a template for the drill locations but I haven't attempted to use it in nearly 25 years for the reasons stated previously.

Just my opinion, but I do no think trimming double sticky tape to follow the outer and inner contours of the letters would be an easy operation. I have not tried it, so I may be wrong about how easy it is.

If I did it, they would likely end up as jumbled as these:
