Serial Number Tag

Was steered to ECS Automotive Concepts to replace the door tag on my 75. Came out great and looks original.

The driver's door was replaced on my 75 so it had the wrong serial number on it. I had to research the serial number build date to get the correct range. Then I sent them a pic of the old one on the door correcting the build date and the serial number. I'm kind of assuming they have some GVW's in their database whether it's a W30 or W25 !
Anyway, i just told them the two corrections and I had the new sticker in a week! Looks great.

What’s interesting, to me at least, is that that sticker, which is officially called (at least nowadays) the Federal Safety Certification Label and also sometimes called a “Nader Sticker” (as in Ralph Nader) in some areas, was needed when I went to title and register my 1978 Toronado in New Mexico. Like most states nowadays, the New Mexico DMV wanted to see the VIN in at least two locations on the car to verify that it is the actual VIN. There is the usual location at the base of the windshield, and then there are other possible locations.

I don’t know when these stickers started appearing on the doors of cars, so I don’t know how many years back New Mexico would have required this. The DMV people never seem to realize that things were different 50 years ago as far as the number of different places on a car the VIN might appear.

Anyway, the DMV accepted this sticker as a second VIN location. I wonder if they realize that you can just go out and buy one and stick it on your car and have it say anything you want.

Here’s the sticker on my ‘78. It doesn’t have the same design, but it does have the same info. Another thing is that sometimes this sticker is removed when the car is repainted if they want to be thorough in the repaint. The shop might not realize that this sticker is important in identifying the car and that they should cover it up instead of removing it when painting the door edge.
