Modify bumpers

Hey guys has any one here ever modified their bumpers. As I have a 77 cutlass supreme brougham the bumpers have the black plastic strips on them. I am thinking of removing them and fill with a metal strip that is paint the same color as the car.Has this been done before?Or would this be a pain in the derriere?

The rub strips were optional but I've never seen many cars without it. Bumpers without the rub strip are smooth faced with just the bumper bolt heads showing.

Finding those would eliminate a lot of work, but it'd probably be quicker to fill and smooth the ones you have.

Look at it this way- customizers did it all the time back in the day, so it's not impossible. Just time-consuming.
