i need help

this is my first olds project and I quickly realize that oldsmobile parts are not cheap. My question is has anybody taken a regular 1970-1972 hood and added 2 fiberglass scoops to it. I came up with this idea when I realized that the true 442 hood were fiberglass on the top and I talked to my painter and he has access to a orginal hood and he said he might make some fiberglass moldings of the scopes and put them on mine but it would not be functional but the aftermarket ones are not functional and they are $700 plus shipping do you think it is possible i think so

I have seen this done before. I sold a 70 442 to a guy a long time ago and he had his body man do the same you are talking about. He added fiberglass scoops to a stock steel hood. It looked pretty good too. The end result will be as good (or bad) as your body man's ability.

What aftermarket hoods are u looking at? as far as i know they are all functional. the one from usbody source (i think) is the only one that u have to put the holes in to urself. tamraz/glastek is fully functional with holes. then u have some cheap pin ons that is top piece only which yes dont ram the air in the carb but does get air in the engine bay. then there is thortons which is almost a exact replica.

if ur body man has access to a original hood why dont he just fix that one for u. i think it would look like crap. but if he did do it all he would have to do is cut a hole for the air cleaner. then guess what it functional.

By the sound of your other two threads, I'd say you should fix your engine first, and worry about cosmetics when you've got a running car.

Thumbs up

Agreed; 'Form over FUNCTION' Classic dilemma...get her running completely first. But GOOD LUCK no matter what you do.

Ive done it before on my 78 cutlass putting a 4 inch cowl onto the stock hood if u have a real torquy motor and it it shakes alot it might crack . but over time siting out in the sun you will see the putty lifting under the paint no matter what but it might be a few years befor you see anything.

They do make add on W-30 hood scoops.

Scoops-3.gif

I know I've seen an actual pic of them somewhere but I can't find it?
Showcars has them and a bunch of other scoops and some Olds body parts.

They don't show them on the Olds catalog page, that drawing is all the way on the bottom of the scoops page.
I have no idea of the price, quality, or how to attach them... other than duct tape.

Even the cheapest repro lift-off all-fiberglass W-25 hoods will look better than adding scoops to a metal hood. It will also be cheaper in the long run and the 'glass won't crack at the joint with the metal due to differential thermal expansion in the sun. You can buy a race-grade hood without an air box for under $500.

Here is a non functional ram air hood for u. looks home made. i hope it is because i dont know anyone that would buy something like this. this hood makes this car look like s$%&. this car is for sale here in utah has been for almost a year now. he wants 10,000$ for it. if he took the hood off and threw it away and put the trim rings on it he could probably get 3-5,000$ for it. but i wouldn't buy it.

Sadly, he probably has $15K into it...

And how can it be a "Ralley Sport" clone without any bowtie emblems...
