Hood tooth damage

When I bought the car I noticed the "tooth" on my hood had some rust showing due to paint chips, etc. I thought is was just due to road debris over time. So, I commenced to removing rust and repainting the tooth.

Well, today when I opened the hood I noticed I had fresh paint chips

So, I am not very happy. I slowly closed the hood and noticed if (and when) I use retard strength to shut the hood it actually contacts the front bumper.

Not only did the PO allow this to happen, I did as well. So, I readjusted the hood bumper stops, which seemed to help a little. I am still trying to maintain even body lines between the fenders and the hood.

I also noticed that there are drilled holes (4 holes I think) in the bottom of the tooth. What is supposed to go here??? Is it another trim piece or maybe a bumper to prevent what I just did?

What year is your car? It looks like a 70.

good question, I assumed those were there to let water drain out - never seen anything mount to them otherwise

Some have said there were some rubber bumpers in all or some of those holes. Haven't ever checked the assembly manual myself to see. I'm with stevengerard....water drainage and makes the car lighter (and faster)

Found a replacement tooth at Original Parts Group, but they are ABS plastic.

Here's to hoping that none of those paint chips were caused by your HEAD.

I owned a '70 once. I better never go bald.

I think it is a rite of passage (one of many I am sure) that one must endure in order to truly be a Oldsmobile owner. The very first time I put my head underneath the hood of my car I cracked my head on that "tooth" when I backed out. I won't say it won't happen again, but I am definitely cognizant of it now.

I bought some little bowling pin shaped bumpers (rubber) from Fusick to insert into those holes, however, they didn't fit tight and would move or fall out.

is there a gasket that goes between the hood extension and the hood, I have sen a few of these off the cars and some have nothing on them some have what looks like intake gasket material. Not sure if someone did that to cushion them a bit or of that is what the factory did

Yes, there should be a body gasket inbetween the hood and the hood tooth.

It might be toothless but it still has a secondary hook on it that can make a mean incision...
