Help - Inspecting for rust/damage
when inspecting a car for rust/damage what are you looking for underneath the car? I know to check the typical hood/trunk/fenders/wheel wells, etc. But when looking under the car, where and what do you look for on a classic car?

I look at :
1) Shock attachment points in the rear and the frame especially near or on the rear wheel arch. I've had two older cars break here.
2) Any attachment point for the four link or whatever type suspension it has. It's tough to see elongated holes but having a friend bounce the car while you look might be helpful. Check the outside bushing housings for holes and rust as it's common there.
3) All lines, brake, fuel, transmission, etc as well as their attachment points.
4) Take a wheel off. Drums, calipers, e-brake cables, etc.
5) Gas tank straps and attachment points (see a pattern here with attachment points )
6) Mounts of any kind. Body, Engine, Transmission, Exhaust, Stabilizer bars, Cross member, Body reinforcements and support braces, Bumper attachment points
7) Suspension. Ball joints and control arms, stabilizer bar end links
I'm sure there are many more but that's all I can think of atm

The rear frame rail where it goes UP just before the rear axle - the whole thing can be nearly rusted away, but unless you look at just the right angle (from inside the wheelwell, usually) you can miss it.
