Get some Metal-Prep, dilute it as directed, and just spray it on - kills rust immediatly!!
Also, you can use a Bondo product that's a thick fiberglass resin you mix the hardener into - it's waterproof. Spreads and forms nicely!
Did many a rust repair with this combo, and never had a comeback - in 30 years!!
I like the sounds of that , I'll have to look into that fiberglass resin bondo , I've been using Chromalight Bondo which is easy to work with , but the stuff you mentioned sounds better . Thanks

What's with the talk about quitting posting stuff?? The short answer is NO, don't succumb to those thoughts. BTW, I like the fire helmet best out of those small MAW ones you have

I'm also having some puter problems. For some reason, access to the web is taking forever. To launch this thread actually took over 45 seconds. I'm used to it only taking about less than 1 second. So I probably will have to take it in for a checkup. A lot of times it sounds like the puter has an old scuzzy drive in it, so somethings definitely wrong. Wierd though, not all sites are hard to pull up. Have you had any delays with CO loading on your PC?
I have had a number of issues with this site loading , posting , and just plain slow , not sure why .

I'll have to check on the Metal Prep also , sounds like an easier route then what I'm doing .

I looked it up .... is " Metal Prep " the name , or is it just an acid that you apply before applying paint ? is it made by Eastwood ?

Finally !

The weather was perfect so I reblasted the trunk pocket , cleaned the mess up , waited for it to dry and got one coat on and the skies changed there tune . I pulled it in the parking garage , and about 5 hours later put the last coat on ....

These are the tools of the trade when it comes to this job , and it worked really well . I really don't think there is any way to clean these brushes after you use POR15 , I think I tried once and it was still hard as a rock the next day .

Here's a shot of the pocket after painting , I stopped after the problem area was covered , because the rest of the pocket is in great shape . I was also very happy to see the other side I did 4yrs ago ( only one coat ) looked great , I shined a flashlight in there along with my dental mirrors and it looks the same as it did when I first painted it. I'm gonna skip to the fenders next , which is gonna be real fun since I have to drive it to get to work 5 days a week . They have to come off and I have to remove the supports to get at the rust ....

here's the last pic for now , this is never gonna rust again !!

A couple more

Here's another shot of the pocket ...

Although I had a rubber glove on the painting hand it turned out I needed both hands at times during the application of POR15 . I call this next photo PORhand syndrome ....

If you catch it right away it will come off with the wipe of a rag , but it seems everything you touch all of a sudden has paint on it .

Also when its all dry on the inside. Scuff it and do the trunk spatter paint or undercoating to further protect the panels.

I forgot about something I noticed when checking both trunk pockets with the dental mirror .... the bad side ( passenger ) inner wheel well is closer to the outer skin then it is on the drivers side . I can see everything with the mirror on the drivers side , but there is a blind spot on the passenger side ... that would explain why there is more of a rust problem on that side . I think at least most of the problem will be solved when the metal gets replaced later on .... bad alignment from the factory.

A Little Further

I scuffed up the POR15 on the outside of the panel and put some primer on to blend in ....

I have some extra gasket material to fill the empty space + I'm gonna use whats left of the gasket material to build a dam !

The dam I speak of is to fix this problem ... my idea is to jam a piece of gasket in the trunk on the wheel well lip on both sides of problem area , so I can fill the area with an rust encapsulator and it has no where to go but seep between the two layers of metal to put a stop to the rust that's forming there out of site. It's hard to explain , so I'm gonna go get another pic to elaborate on this better ...

sorry , I forgot to circle the problem spot , but you can see the start of the brown spot that runs upward about 3/4 of an inch .

Ok , here's the pic with my idea .

The red circles is where the rubber gasket pieces are jammed , and the arrow shows where I'll be pouring the rust ecapsulator .... simple

I May Need Advice .

Ok , I was gonna maybe take the fender off this weekend and get the support removed and blasted and painted and have everything back on the car for monday morning ..... The hood is a problem , there is a pipe above my car I could maybe tie a rope from my hood to the pipe , and put a block of wood to support that side ..... any ideas ? I think this will work to support the hood , but I have to lay the hood down once I get the fender off . I can't let the owner/managers in the building catch wind of this so how hard is it to pull the hinge out by hand when I need to reinstal the fender ? Thanks in advance

Bryan

yesi got the gun cleaned,we have a gun cleaner at work for that just dissasemble it out it on the squirters and turn it on.You will need a broom stick to prop the front of the hood and then use a phone book at the rear corner to prevent damaging the cowl and windshield ,add a couple of bungee straps to the front and rear to keep it from moving around .you may have to phone a friend to get the hood set on the phone book and put the prop rod in at the same time.

cool , I think at this point I'll have to wait a couple of weekends to do this ... this one is shot at this point , and I probably will go fishing next weekend I'm getting tired of putting this crap off all the time . Gotta get rid of the ball & chain ( my wife )

I'm Losing It !!

I had the crazy idea to try and do the fender thing at 1:30 on a sunday . I came to my senses , but I at least got a decent setup for next weekend when I start this . Here's a couple of pictures of the setup I will be using . I took liberty of sneaking in my wifes facebook account while she was with her new boyfriend last night , and found out who the guy is ... my heart was pounding so hard ( heart condition ) I had to X out of it , and this is where I got the crazy idea to do this repair the minute she got home ( to get away ) .... anyways here's the dumb pictures....

Now that would qualify for REDNECK humor! Don't get hurt doing that Bry. You need someone to help you; those parts are heavy and the ww arm isn't going to take much stress before it bends or breaks.

It's all good , I took the bolts out and It almost seemed weightless to maneuver on the phonebook , and then I tied it down in the back so it could not move . To heavy you say ? I put the hood on by myself like 5yrs ago ( that was some fun ) It's amazing the obsticles you can overcome when all alone .

Thanks , that was 7yrs ago ( you can kinda make out the date on the photo ) , he's now 9 and my daughter is 7 . These were taken back when we were using a regular 35mm canon camara , took great pics while it worked . I think between digital photos , and regular pictures we have thousands of pictures of our kids , not counting the camcorder .

Grinding Noise is Back !

The noise that prompted me to replace the water pump and ps pump is back . I'm thinking ( hoping ) it's the fan clutch !

Yeah, but he was getting a squealing noise like a bearing. A timing chain would sound different, right?

Bry, why not take the clutch off and see if it has any wobble in the shaft, or if there's any sign of leakage from the back.

usually if you can spin the blades real easy and they keep spinning the clutch is bad.if the noise went away when you changed a part mabey you got a bad part ,were they new or remaned ? i have gotten a few bad reman parts,a lot of reman wheel bearings the past few years a bad steering gear box a few water pumps and a bad p/s pump too.

that's another thing I had been thinking " bad water pump bearing on the reman " . .... funny thing is , today it made no noise at all !! The only thing different is the weather.

oh , and the fan spins like it should , almost makes one rpm when I spin it hard by hand

bad belt then, try spraying it with brake cleaner while it is idleing to clean it,but if its old it will still be cracking and skinny making it run down in the pully on rusty dirty surface.Do not use belt dressing if its a serpentine belt it will jump off and possibly injure you or your car.If it is a serpentine mabey it is a idler bushing going bad.

Umm, 1976 Olds rocket 350 - no serpentine belt. Belts were just replaced so it's not too likely to be that.

Posting Pics Soon

This is not easy dodging the owners/managers here . I got a few bolts off so far on the fender , and this is the first time I wished our neighbors were home , because their car would be parked right next to mine blocking the view .

oh , and I mentioned on my other thread that I found out what the noise is .... The Fan Clutch ! It squeeks like a pack of field mice .

Why is such a big issue for those guys if you want to fix your car in a space that you're renting anyway??? Sounds like they don't have much of a heart. Man, I'm glad I have my own garage. If I lived closer you would be welcome to use it any time and I'd help you with the work.

The Fender Comes Off !

Gotta love those clips on the inner wheel well . Here's my son in the pic trying to show everyone his missing tooth ....

I think my wife didn't like the fender on the bed deal ...

Does nayone know where the spot welds are on the other piece under the support ?
