I am looking for pics or measurements for door edge guards. 70 SX convertible with lower supreme horizontal chrome trim. I bought fusick repro door edge guards and want to know how low to install. I.e. is the bottom of door edge guard even with the top of this supreme molding or does it go part way down on this molding?

The edge moldings should be profiled to the door and only fit in one position

 

Understand the profile but the repros are not perfect and I need to bend a little and it looks like they could be made to move plus or minus 1 inch up and down.

 

I have a set of those moldings from Fusick also. They are full length moldings and definitely don't go all above the side trim. If anything, you'd have to either:
1. Cut them to fit above the side trim
2. loosen the side trim to tap the molding on.

Be careful with your paint if you have BC/CC - it's going to be thicker than the lacquer that was on the car from the factory and you could easily chip it.

The door edge gaurds are installed about 1 5/8" to an 1 3/4" down from the start of the vertical part of the door as shown in the attached pictures. They do go behind the side stainless mouldings on the 70/71 Supremes. It is a bit disconcerting to bang them on the doors, hoping they don't chip anymore paint than they have to. A rubber mallet works well.

For that exact reason I didn't put my originals back on after painting the car. I eventually found an auto paint supply store that has plastic glue-on door edge guards that have a larger gap and fit on easily. They may not be original, but they work and look close enough that you can't tell the difference from 10 feet.

 

I use a screen door spline roller tool to widen the side to side on the channel. After test fits to make sure it doesn't chip when going on - it's a quick install. Slow work though. Same thing I had to do with my deck lid reveal trim.

 

Are these still available?

 

Please don't put the edge guards on the doors....they ruin the body lines if the car
Even if they were an option on the original car , a small paint chip looks better than those.

Nice '72 Cutlass, always liked the Saddle bronze color. My Dad's '72 Supreme coupe was Saddle bronze, Saddle interior, and Saddle tan vinyl top - he always got compliments on how rich the car looked. Just a great combination of colors for the timeless body style.
