I had to put my front bumper back on last week and had a light bulb that may have long since occurred to all of you, but I thought I'd just put it out there.

I've never been all that picky about fender and bumper tolerances until lately because mostly the body shop took care of this during repaints or I couldn't ever quite hold, adjust, and tigthen bolts for a 125 lb bumper all at the same time.

Here are Olds fender specs from their 1966 Assembly Manual:

Last week I put my floor jack under my bumper to hold it right where I wanted it and got close to those tolerances. Or at least the bumper aligns way better with the front fenders. Somewhere along the line, I'm about to do the same for the rear bumper and get it where it should be too.

I'll bet I'm way behind the curve on this...

Maybe I'm just ignorant and lots of you guys have long since figured out the many uses for a floor jack. I always just stuck it under the frame when I wanted to change out a starter or grease the front end...

 

My floor jack has replaced an extra set of hands more times than I can count. Very handy tool.

 

I have performed the exact same method on both my front bumper and rear bumper. I have two floor jacks of two different sizes. They come in very handy as a third hand for tweaking the bumper into position while you're putting the screws to the nuts/bolts.

 

Not Olds related but I used my floor jack to lift close to a 1000 lb header beam in conjunction with my engine hoist. I used a lally column on the floor jack and lifted 1' at a time. To get the final height I put the engine hoist under the beam. I did the whole job by myself with the exception of having my 16 year old daughter run the winch on my UTV to drag the beam into initial position to pick. I set it up on the two wheel dollies ahead of time to move it around.

 

That deck beam is amazing. Job well done.
