Rob PATIENCE PATIENCE PATIENCE........... try and save pieces that you cut out for templates... try and keep as much original metal as possible ..and use a GAS mig not a flux core get scrap metal and butt joint them multiple times and figure out the temp and speed. make sure when your fabbing the patch make it nice and tight for butt welds I have a miller 185 what are you using?

you should have dicolouration in the metal as you weld and a clean bead make sure both sides are clean this last patch I did turned out good other than 2 spots where I went fast and got spatter you can actually hear a good weld as well

Take a class at a nearby community or technical collage if you can afford it it will help a lot. I start my classes on Saturday called welding for gearheads

x2 on taking a class, x2 on no flux core. David from Davidsfarm on youtube does a nice "how to mig weld" video.
