Body gaps

I am preparing for quarter panel replacement on a 70 A body. Body is in epoxy primer and I am hanging the doors to make sure original gaps are where they should be. I know there is a difference in factory and show car gaps and I am restoring the car, not necessarily a show car so Im thinking 3/16"-1/4" before polyester primer, sealer, and paint. Im still deciding on single stage or BC/CC for final.(wether that makes a diff?)
From guys who have experienced this, what is the gap I should shoot for around the doors (front, back, top and bottom) at this point?
Are hood and trunk gaps the same?
Thanks for any tips

Use a wood paint stick stirrer. Perfect gaps.

Yes Ive heard that also and agree at least on final assembly but at this point, before some layers of primer/sealer/paint and clear maybe? The sitter stick gap or 3/16 may be tight?

You're describing mils of thickness regarding the paint. I'm just doubtful that type of buildup will occur or even get close to being a problem.
Now if you were painting ships and submarines like I used to do then thick would be easy but automotive paint is a different animal. I really think it will be fine at this stage of the game.

FWIW

I had a hard time when I 1st tried to install my trim. If paint is around the post that hold the nylon chrome holders, they will spread out too much to allow the trim to snap on

it will definitely make a difference. I’ve been doing show cars for 20 yrs for the big 3. 5mils is the least you want to start with. Primer, sealer, base coat, and clear you will close the gaps up fast
