I have alot of body panel to replace and i really want to flange due to my sub-par welding skills. i purchased a cheap harbor freight flanger and it doesnt flange deep enough. What have you used? i dont mind spending some money if its good. I have looked at the eastwood vise grip type flanging tools anyone used them? Most of the air powered units look just like my harbor freight just with a different off brand name on them.

 

I have used the narrow one from Eastwood that comes in their panel kit. Worked slowly but does a fair job. Easier to control then the air type.Used the
'dimple' tool for the rivets and used the adhesive. Long seam on 98 quarter, hid seam under chrome strip.Using' Cleco?' clamps when welding or riveting is a great help.

 

Cut, when you say it doesn't flange deep enough, are you saying the jaw on the tool isn't deep enough or that it doesn't press the metal deep enough? It only needs to be as thick as the steel you are using. As far as jaw depth, you don't need much more than say 3/8".....probably less....

No, I butt weld. When doing collision work, I used to flange the sail panel of a car before welding on the new qtr. I didn't use a tool though. I would cut a 3/4" strip, drill holes in the sail panel, and plug weld the strip behind the sail panel, overhanging it enough to act like a flange to weld to....little more work, but does the job!

I have thought about that ent72olds, I have also heard alot of body men are going to the glue

 

I added to my post above....and yes, glue is being used more these days in the collision industry. It is expensive, need the proper glue gun and tips. Also, probably wouldn't be useful to you unless you were doing full qtrs...

Then what do you need to flange? Cut a couple inches off the top of the sail panel on the new qtr, slip it behind the cut on the sail panel on the car, and there's your flange!
