1970 roof skin

I picked up a 1970 cutlass that needs a new roof. I was wondering if anyone knows if a 1970 chevelle skin will fit. I ask because we have a place that sells chevelle parts and I can save on shipping.

Check with a glass shop, and see if the windows have the the same part #'s!

Skin as in a hardtop? Like the car in my avatar has? Couldn't you get the material and have it installed or you install it...? or do you mean the actual metal?

If it's the metal, then no, the Chevelle is not the same. If it's the vinyl top, then find a local trim shop the does interiors/convertible tops, they more than likely will also do vinyl top installations, and may have the correct material on hand, or should be able to order it for you.

Yes sorry I mean the metal. Does any car share the same roof skin?

I found this info but I am just passing along what it states.

Sheetmetal parts are often interchangeable, and there are some circumstances that some parts are unique to a certain bodystyle, like the SS hood. The listing below is compiled from the best of my knowledge; there might be more to add as time continues to emphasize on other GM marques. Most of the commonly interchanged sheetmetal have been focused on the Chevelle/El Camino, but refer to the citation below on BOP marques.
1968-72 Chevelle decklids interchange with the following:
  • 1970-72 Monte Carlo
  • 1970-72 Buick Skylark *The roof panel, which is the sheetmetal part only, interchanges with the A-body hardtops built by all GM divisions.
  • This means that a Cutlass Supreme (exc. 1970-72 Holiday coupe bodystyle), Lemans, and Skylark roof panel would fit on a 1968-72 Chevelle (including the 1968/69 300 series post coupe), but it is wise to compare the salvaged piece with the existing panel before cutting and welding (use a MIG welder).
  • The roof panel does not include the sail panels, and it might be wise to salvage an entire roof assembly from a hardtop of the same year as the car that is in need of a roof transplant.
  • The roof panel is spot-welded to the sail panels (the upper part of the quarter panel), and the spot welds must be cut when removing the roof panel.

69442C I'm not sure of your source, and you may be right, but looking at the shapes of the A body roofs, I just would not chance using a roof panel form anything but another Cutlass. I would like to think that a body man familiar with this era of cars would know, but I sure as heck would make sure that they have that knowledge.

I looked on the opgi website and the roof for my car says it fits chevelle also. So I guess I will take mine off and take it to the chevy place and compare the two. Now is the seam for the sides behind the dip rail? It lookes like there is a weld but I have not sanded any rust off to see for sure.

You can always cut the roof at the top of the glass and weld in the center part of the roof .....would take a good body guy to bend the metal and such to the right specs....but if all else fails ......

Not sure about the seam without lookin at it.

I dug out an Old Mitchell Manual which is a book used by body shops years ago for crash estimates/parts ordering. I looked up the 70 F85 (the book didn't show it as a Cutlass..same body) roof panel and it showed a part number of 7790418. In looking further, this same roof panel number is used on 68/69 Buick Special, 70-72 Skylark, 68-72 Chevelle, 68-72 F85, 68/69 Pontiac Tempest and 70-72 Pontiac Tempest/Lemans. Therefore, the roof skin is the same on all GM A body 2 doors sharing the same style roof line from 68-72.
Brian
Oh, the Mitchell Manual was dated 1974 and showed number GM-107

Pretty interesting.

I was hoping it was the same that saves me like $100.00 but I will still take my skin when I pick up the new one. Thanks
