1969 442 Stainless Trim Refubishing
1969 442 Stainless Trim Refubishing
I have watched all the online video’s, but have yet to master getting that chrome look to my wheel well and body line stainless trim on my 1969 442. Can somebody share the secret? Thanks.
1. Light imperfections...3-4 steps with different colors of rouge on a buffing wheel. Clean the wheel between colors.
2. Deeper defects treat like paint. 150 up to 1000 grit paper then hit it with the 3-4 step rouge.
3. Dents are worked out like a body panel. Dolly out, file, sand, rouge.
The trick for all of the above is to be gentile and do it in baby steps.
Be real careful the SS parts don't get wrapped up on the buffing wheel. It will destroy the trim and hurt you. This means you are pushing too hard and not letting the wheel do the work.

I use paper in steps up to 4000 grit and then buff by hand with Autosol Edel-Chromglanz or Happich Simichrome. The hand buffing takes less time than any of the sandpaper steps.
It does take more time than using various grades of buffing rouge on metal prepped with 1000 grit. But you have a choice. Do what you are comfortable with.
