I decided to install my new grilles that I purchased from Fusick tonight.
I have a few questions.

The old grilles had small holes for the screws that attach the grilles to each other and on the ends. See pics.




The AIM says look at page 118 for fasteners, but I can not find page 118. My old grilles didn't use any fasteners.


Does this slot go behind this attachment or just go around it?



Does this look correct? The holes don't line up with the threaded holes.

I would say that maybe it was a drain hole or something but your old grille certainly looks like it was "fastened" at 1 point.

 

That is funny you ask this now. I just found the same thing on my set about an hour ago. The original grills had a self threading screw at all 3 locations. The Fusick grills must require a nut on the bottom side because the holes are to big for the screw.

 

In your last picture.....you have the wrong metal fender filler piece in there (on both sides if neither lines up). You have the '71/2 style....the holes are in a different location VS. the '70 version (thus the misalignment).

In your second-to-last and third-to-last pics (re: the headlight housing and grille mounting) the larger grill tab sits BEHIND the headlight housing mounting post. Loosen or remove the HHS and install the grill first (or see if it'll slip in behind it with the HHS loose).

 

I'll try to check mine tomorrow for you, one pair I replaced the other are still original. I do know that the center screw is a big old self tapping screw with a proportionally big head on it to hold both sides together - it is a Philips head

I guess I could just drill the filler to put in the bolts.

It makes sense for the grille to go behind the headlight housing post but both grilles that I took off were just slipped around the posts.

I spoke to Fusick yesterday and they said the grilles were made in the 80's and that I am the first to have a problem.
While I don't believe I am the first, he was nice and is sending me a grille installation kit.
I will keep you informed.
