Front Door Window Belt Reveal (EXTERIOR weatherstrip/sweep)

The car: 1972 Cutlass S Hardtop, style 3687

Ref: GM Parts Catalog 31 May 1980, section 10.708, page 10-78.

I have spent at least 10-12 hours searching the GM parts wiki to find the correct screws for attaching the reveal moulding/weatherstrip to the door. The best I can come up with is part number 4492963 which is a 'weld stud replacement' - but there are no weld studs related to this moulding/weatherstrip. I can't find any specs for part #4492963.

The car spent some time at a restoration shop and I believe they may have used incorrect screws to attach the reveal moulding. They use #8-18 x 1/2" flat head phillips screws. There seems to be 2 issues with these screws: (1) they seem to be too long as some of them contact the sheet metal behind the reveal moulding mounting surface, and (2) the conical portion of the screw head (where the threads stop) passes through the holes in the reveal moulding and makes contact with the sheet metal mounting surface, so some of the screws behave like the hole is stripped. I was unable to remove one screw by turning, even after I put outward pressure on the end of the screw. I had to cut the screw head off in order to remove the reveal moulding.

I looked up the screws attaching the wheel well chrome mouldings and found they are part number 588546, which is a #8-18 x 7/16" modified truss head phillips sheet metal screw which is fully threaded. These seem like a better choice for installing the reveal trim since they are 1/16" shorter than the current screws and the truss head will not go through the holes in the reveal moulding like the flat head screws do.

Can anyone reading this point me to the correct screws to use for attaching the Door Window Belt Reveal trim to the door??

The "flat head" screws are the correct style for those outer window sweepers. Forget the "modified truss head" style you show in your second pic. Also - forget that "weld stud replacement" stuff and part number.

Of course they shouldn't go all the way through the holes in the sweepers....someone got too aggressive installing some and it's apparent they only succeeded in wallowing out the hole(s) in the sweeper and also stripping out the hole in the door skin.

The originals would be black as well if that matters to you.

AMK Products ($30 min order) has a #8 x 3/8 screw w/the flat/countersunk phillips drive head style that might work...they show to be stainless steel (PN 13340). I believe the 3/8" length is what the factory used....not 1/2".

The "weld stud replacement" just means that those screws were also used to replace missing/broken weld studs that hold the trim clips on the pinchweld at the windshield and back window.

I found somebody selling p/n 4492963 screws on Ebay - photo attached. Easy to see how these could be a replacement for a broken stud, but I can't see how these could be used to attach the reveal moulding on my car. IMO, the Wiki parts info is wrong for my application which is OEM stock.

After spending 2 days of frustration working this trivial issue, I'm going to just go with some #8-18 x 3/8 pan head phillips stainless screws.

Joe and Patton, thank you for your assistance!!
