Trunk Spatter Paint

Hello guys, I got the Olds painted a while ago, paint guy had the trunk painted same metallic color as the exterior, I wanna go for the original trunk spatter paint look and plan on doing it myself. I'm gonna order the spatter paint cans from OPGI, i'm gonna go with black and aqua color. Should i apply the spatter can paint directly on the painted trunk then clear coat it, or should i do some other prepping before painting? Also the can is 11oz so how many cans should i need to paint the entire trunk?

What year/ model car do you have? Early A-bodies had body color trunks, not spatter paint like the later cars.

Minimum of two cans, scuff it up with a gray or red pad, wipe clean , then spray..clear coat AFTER it dries

You clear spatter paint?
I’m not sure I ever saw a shiny spatter paint trunk before…or is it dull coat?

we’re 74’s aqua or gray?

Never knew that. I’ve only ever used it once and it definitely wasn’t a show car.

The AC Delco spatter paint you used to get in the can recommended a clear coat. However you can no longer get it so maybe what you can get now doesn’t require a sealer

Is there a particular brand of rattle can spatter paint that provides a finish that is close to the original?

If you want OE spatter paint for a concours restoration I doubt it had clear coat on it. Here's the spatter paint mentioned earlier.

Suggestion...
Depending on the Grey/White or Black/Aqua, spray a 'base' of similar grey or black prior to the spatter paint.
Did that with mine, it helps in that you wont go thru multiple cans for desired coverage.

Wether you spray the rattle can trunk liner, or get the professional Zolatone and spray it with a schutzgun, make sure you wear PPE. I wouldn't trust a Horrible Freight respirator.

Has anyone tried Duplicolor? Does it have the correct appearance? This stuff is easier to get and less expensive.

All those factory type spatter paints are not water resistant. That's why a clear coat is recommended, Zolatone is a tough as nails architectural coating that once dry, is water resistant and abrasion resistant. And it looks good. TGP even has it in factory colors. I use it on many of my resto's.

I was browsing around on Thornton Muscle cars web site the other day and noticed they have a trunk spatter selection.....

I have been highly unimpressed with anything from OPGI or Parts Place, just my opinion.
Like someone mentioned Fusick may have something good too.

Yes but it took about seven spray cans to do the whole trunk,. Now I Zolatone probably not cheaper but I think it is a bit tougher. Did satin urethane clear on top. Summit makes some cheap two part stuff. Holding up well after many many years.. Make sure the spatter paint is completely dry before you clear as I think the spatter paint is water based... I run an adhesion promoter like BullDog before I clear.. I don't sand before I clear.

In my experience, it takes appx 6 aerosol cans of spatter paint if you want to do a nice job, nicer than GM ever did it.

I am also a proponent of going over the spatter paint with a catalyzed, matte clear. It really toughens up the finish if one actually uses the trunk.

I use this stuff from the parts place. No clear and it holds up well. Probably not an exact match to the factory colors but it looks good

Did you spray it with a schutzgun or HVLP gun?

That's what I used and just used a spray gun with the largest nozzle it came with. I don't have specifics but it was a hair smaller than was recommended and still turned out. I wish all car painting was that easy lol
