Fuel door rubber bumpers

What's the trick to getting these installed? I've lubed them up with oil and just can't get them in the bumper slots. Thx.

As you said, apply some oil to the rubber pieces to help. Then you can push the rubber tabs through the metal bumper slot with a thin flathead screw driver or putty knife, being careful not to tear or puncture. If you can reach, you can pull the rubber through the metal from behind with some pliers.

Thx mate, I thought about that but I am really nervous about scratching the new chrome. Safer to try from the backside with the plyers idea...I'll give it a shot. Bumper is off the car.

Don't pull too hard. Try the combination method.

Ask me how I know. Lube it up and pull gently, use something soft like a popsicle stick (cut square) or your small bladed screwdriver, to gently push the tabs through. Pull too hard and the rubber can tear right off. Maybe my bumpers were cheaply made.
