I just stumbled upon what looks like a screaming deal on an AMD '70 rear bumper (no cutouts) on CARID. I got it for $126.28 and with tax and shipping to NJ it'll be $180 delivered to my door.
I've seen some people have decent results with AMD fitment and finish, while some have experienced some issues and waviness in the finish of theirs. Either way, I'm on a tight budget, my car is driver quality and it's gotta be better than my original bumper.
I rarely shop on this site and have never purchased from them before and, to me, it seems too good to be true because everywhere else I looked rear bumpers without cutouts are selling right now for $450-$700 (more with cutouts) and shipping can be well over $100 on top of that. Fusick's bumper jumped from $379 to $579 in the last month or two (not incl tax or shipping). I feel like I'm taking a chance so if things go awry for me on this purchase in any way, I'll come back and share it here.
I'd be interested in hearing anyone's experience with CARID, I'm not sure if they stand behind their products when there are problems, or what.
AMD seems to be very decent - my '72 rear bumper (with cutouts) had some minor chrome surface waviness but barely perceptible unless you're looking for it. As to actual install fit, no issues - as good as the OEM it replaced. I have a replacement front bumper still in box for my next rainy day project.
Excellent price you've noted - I bought my bumpers almost 2 years back by now and still paid @ $250 shipped at that time.
As promised, here's what's happened... I placed my bumper order at carid.com 2 days ago and received an order confirmation...that's it. I've been waiting for a shipping notification with a tracking id, but haven't received it yet. BUT, the good news is that the bumper showed up today! The bad news is that it's got some damage. I've attached pics below. It seems to have a quarter-sized ding on the face with a deep gouge through the chrome down to bare metal. I went back to my order and it said it couldn't work on a claim because until after my order has been delivered 2 hours later, it allowed me to set up a "no cost to me" replacement delivery. I'm told I will hear back in 24-48 hours.
I haven't taken a close look at the quality of the chrome because it's covered in light oil and, well, those work and family things keep getting in the way. As you can see in the pics, I think it looks pretty good through the smears. I'll wipe down a section or two and take more pics...just to assess the finish.
As for the packaging, a somewhat thick paper with a waxy coating (probably so it doesn't soak up the light oil) was taped around the bumper face, and this was just placed in a box. The box had a "repair" done to it with some extra cardboard and tape, which made me think the damage may have been there prior to shipping, was ignored and shipped out anyhow. Don't know for certain. Anyway, it really could use a lot more packing material for protection IMHO. Had they done that, it's likely the damage and this purchase return could've been avoided.
I'll let you know how they handle the replacement.
Overall, the box shipped alright Note the repair on the box Backside ding Front-side ding Front-side ding with gouge
I received the replacement bumper today and in a nutshell it looks very good to me, I'm very satisfied with it. See pics for the quality and make your own assessment. I wiped off shipping oil and hit it with some glass cleaner so it's not perfectly clean but good enough to assess. I don't see any flaws in the chrome like visible waves. The bumper is lightweight (thinner metal than stock). In terms of manufacturing consistency, both the bumpers (the one with the ding and this second one) have similar quality chrome. Overall I'm satisfied with this AMD bumper.
Like before, as a customer of CARiD their shipping communications are hoaky. I received an email last night saying it would ship around 5/17 and I'd get an email with tracking number, but i received the email today with the tracking number saying it would be delivered by end of day today....and it came mid day...like an hour after i got the shipping email. So, I'm very happy with how quickly the product arrived, but their communications are bad.
The return process was easy, just a request from their website and 1 follow up email. So far no problems, no other charges assessed to me (like return shipping or restocking fees). Although I was under the impression the shipper would've picked up the bad bumper for return, but they just dropped the new one and left. So, I still need to figure out how to get it back to them.
All things considered, I'd do business with CARiD again since they supported this return well without issues and they handled it quickly.
Both mine came shipped that way as well - I believe they're drop-shipped from AMD regardless of whom purchased thru. Fortunately both mine arrived w/o damage at such time purchased - front bumper still awaits an install opportunity at some point, hasn't been a rush since my OEM still in decent shape but for some surface aging issues beginning on the underside.
