I've got a 70 convertible I'm considering putting a ram air on it. Is there any differences in the hoods the OPGI, The Parts Place or any other co. Thanks

 

I don't personally know myself, but try a search on the site. I have seen a lot of threads discussing this topic

 

I bought mine from The Parts Place. It is a Glastek Hood. When my painter was prepping it it was sitting outside on a 95'degree day. Bubbles came up all over the hood where there were air pockets in the resin. Each one had to be ground out and refilled. Thankfully this happened before it was painted. Bottom line is I will have as much in this hood in prep work and paint as if I had bought the better quality hood from Thorton's.

 

I don't think they are by any means all the same. The Parts Place has been selling some damaged hoods cheap on E-bay lately, I think the last one they sold around $650. That said, I do think you can buy a better hood if you're willing to spend more money. I wouldn't rule out finding one on this site either. I think if you post under parts wanted you will probably get a response or two, maybe an OEM. - Steven

 

I'm putting a Parts Place Ram Air hood on my 72 Cutlass. I'm bringing it to the shop this weekend. I'll update the forum on how it goes.

 

I have a real nice original, I'd sell for $2,500.00.

 

Not to be a debby downer, but i've seen it be really hard to get some paint shops to match the rest of the colour on your car.

If you do buy a hood, make sure you get a really reputable paint shop to do the work.

 

I bought mine from Thornton's and had the same problem. That was many years ago so their hoods may be better now.

I would suggest that you take a heat gun and warm the surface to look for air pockets before you take it to the shop. You don't want to get the surface too hot. The bubble will come up pretty quickly if there is an air pocket. Better to find them before paint.

 

That's most likely where I'll buy mine. I can't afford a Thorntons hood. How was the fit, did you have to work it at all?

My hood bolted on perfect. The body shop didnt have to do any extra work to make it fit.. Fiber Concepts tested the hood on a cutlass at his shop before shipping it out to me.. I would buy from him again if I ever get a vert.

 

Alex, how was the rear of the hood where the cowl stainless goes? Did you have to shave it a bit? I've heard really good things about FC and Robb.

 

I posted on this before and I'll mention it again. If you are planning on doing a mid to upper level resto that will last for a long time as well as upping the resale value of your vehicle, get an original OE or Thorton hood. Ultimately, it's worth it.

When using this one with a fiberglass frame do you use lighter hood springs? The pictures in the link look great and $899 is certainly reasonable. I have seen some of the OEM hoods priced right and if I'd known that another five hundred dollars from what I spent would buy an OEM I would have gone that way. - Steven
