71-72 Rear Decklid Emblem Installation
New repop decklid, and need to install the '4-4-2' emblems on it. Already painted car! Doh! Not sure why the body guy didn't do it, but oh well.
So, they go in an area that's blind from the inside, so no way to attach the speed nuts. So what's the secret? Adhesive?
Any insight here would be very appreciated!

If you didn't get them as part of your emblems, they are called "barrel clips".
Available in different sizes. You can probably pick them up at local body shop supply.
This website has pics on pg 12 of their catalogue if you're interested. http://www.henrysautomotivewarehouse.com/2011_web.pdf

Hm, makes me wonder if the emblems with the barrel clips were used on a fender. I may just buy a new emblem with the clips.
And positioning the emblem(s) on the decklid? Any tips there?

The other thing you do is get someone to pull their numbers and shoot a pic of the drilling so you'd have a template. A photo with measurements would be helpful?

I just cut the studs off of my emblems, then to help align them, I taped a paint stick just below them so the bottoms of the emblems could rest evenly on it, I then just put a few dabs of import gray gasket sealer on them, this way I could position them perfectly and did not have to drill any holes. Now no worries of water getting in there and will never rust.

This is what I did and it worked real well. I got a piece of cardboard and poked the emblem pins through. Trying to keep them level and evenly spaced. Once they are pefectly lined up, pull them out and thats the template. I then taped it to car used a center punch then drilled. You will still measurements for exact placement. I also used the push in barrel clips on the lid and fenders

Fender 442 and any nose numbers (69-70) use speed nuts on the back. As mentioned, barrel clips on the trunklid.
I like the adhesive trick, but I'm not sure about using globs of glue. I migh trim some thick 3M emblem tape to fit in the hollows of the emblem so you can't see the tape from the outside. Never tried it, though.
Remember when you do the 4's on 70-73, there is VERY little space between the two 4s. If I recall correctly, the 69's had a bit more gap back on the trunk, but it's been so long since I had one I don't recall for sure. And be very careful to ensure the numbers are perfectly aligned. It's just a pet peeve of mine to see haphazard emblem placement. There's bigger fish to fry in life than to worry about number spacing, but it still bugs me when I see a nice resto cheapened by misaligned numbers. To me, that stands out like a sore thumb.
Next time I go out to the shop I'll try to remember to pop the numbers off the trunk and make a "template" of sorts from a hardtop. I might be wrong, but I believe the the convertible lid placement is a tad bit different than hard top.

Allen R - Which clips are they on page 12 of your post?
I called Fusick's and ordered some clips they sell with their' emblems. They look different than some of the ones I've seen, guess they will work?
Question is, what size holes do I drill?

The sizes listed on P12 of that catalogue tell you what size the inside hole is (the stud) and what size to drill for it to fit.

Hello All,
Going to pick up my car (72 442 vert) tomorrow, and just realized I had never given my painter a template for the trunk numeral mounting. Does anyone have either a template or some good pics with dimensions of where to drill the holes? I'd like to use the OE style mounting technique. (Hopefully 70POST is somewhere online)
Thanks

Have a look at Napa they have a section with all these little items that you need to put you car together >I picked some barrel nuts up for Shane(Oldzzy) and they are exact ones that came off his trunk emblem (.032 )even said on it .They also have all the nuts and bolts that you could ever need .They also come in nice little baggies !The plastic ones that Fusick's sell are not useable if you have the original holes drilled from GM they are too big.

Were you referring to the trunk emblem? I ran across a member here about 2 weeks ago (????who???) and he has an NOS deck lid rocket he wants 100.00 for.
