‘68 Hood Hinge Height

I’m convinced something is wrong with my hood hinges. Next to impossible to work under the hood with that little clearance. I’m showing “31 from top of grill to bottom of hood when fully open. I know the ‘68s has less clearance than later A bodies but this can’t be right. Getting ready to take hood off to drop in the new motor so this would be an ideal time to swap/repair hinges if there is an issue. Any ‘68 guys willing to let me know what height they are getting?

I hate to disappoint you, but that's about all the room there is. Mine measures the same. They changed the hood hinge in '69 to a 3-bolt pattern that attaches to the fender on each side which gave more vertical clearance. But that extra clearance was somewhat negated by the "tongue" that was attached to the hood. I've banged my head on both hoods enough now to know to duck when I come out from under the hood!

Ha thanks. I’m still in the learning period and I’m a slow learner. I figured something was up when I helped my buddy work on his ‘63 Galaxie and his hood went up so high. Setting the timing with the hood attached is brutal on the ‘68. I’m starting to get a nice callous on the back of my head.

Yes, we all have the scars on our heads to prove your discovery, however the 69's and up are not much better.

Not as much fun as replacing the power brake booster.

I measured mine the other day and it was more like 33-34" from the top tip of the grille to the bottom edge of the chrome. Then of course, my hinges may have been "conditioned" over the years by me trying to push that &(^%&()**()^!! up higher. There may also be some slop in the fender mounting bolts that mine's taking advantage of too.

Jeez an extra 2-3 inches would make a big difference (no jokes please). Seriously I’ll get the hinges looked over when I take the hood off. I could at least fit my hard hat under there easier with more room. Brake booster will definitely be replaced while hood is off.

You think that is bad, try a 62 f-85 or Cutlass

After looking at the ‘62 F85 I feel a little better. Here’s a pic of my right hinge. Seems like it is bent at the end. Also when I close my hood I have to push both sides down the last 1-2 inches in the back by the windshield to fully close. Time to get them rebuilt or replaced. Looking for suggestions for either.

If you need to push down on the back after it is closed then you need to adjust the hinges. You will likely be able to rock the hinges back witch will lower the back when closed and also open the hood a little farther when open.
