hood clearance

will an air gap manifold on a 455 fit under a stock 68 supreme hood? has edelbrock carb and edelbrock triangle filter.

I can't answer the clearance question, but those triangle filters are crap. The flow disruption can negate any flow benefits from the manifold. The entire intake system needs to work together, from air cleaner inlet to the ports in the heads. Using an expensive, high-flow manifold and handicapping it with a restrictive, flow-disrupting air cleaner is a waste of money.

It depends on whether the OP is using this.

I guess the second one is better? I have the first one... hate the look. If it is a performance hog too it has to go.

For what little thread value it has mine is on a 455, Edelbrock Performer, Edelbrock Carb with OAI hood on my 1970 and it fits fine. Note sure how much 'extra' room I have. I would check but my engine is on a stand.

Maybe. It will be close depending on the choice of parts. You may need a drop base air cleaner. Which will likely interfere with the carb linkage. That means some fab work to the cleaner base. I've played this game with many cars with stock hoods and aftermarket intakes/carbs/cleaners...from vettes to B body Chryslers. Small block hooded Vettes are the worst.
What I do is get the specs for everything (Mechanical drawings or other) from the manufacturer, intake, carb, spacer, cleaner etc.... Once I have the height spec for each item I calculate the total stack up. Dont forget to include the gaskets & spacers and the dam wing nut and stud.
You can use various devices to mimic the total stack up assembly. Try to mimic the total diameter of where the air cleaner(s) would live to get all the hood ribbing in on the experiment. Put said mock up on the stock intake with the carb removed. Then I use modeling clay and lay it on the highest point and then attempt to gently close the hood, careful. Have someone looking up into the bay if possible. The clay thickness will give you the static gap. Now subtract engine mount movement and hood insulation and a little for thermal expansion. Rule of thumb is at least 1" min gap to avoid interference between the hood and cleaner lid. Obviously more is better. Any less and you gambling on the motor mounts. Unless they're solids.
If the aftermarket intakes on the engine and its all installed in the car do the same with the mock up. This will show you which components your limited to.
Follow up so we know what you did to make it work.

I'm running an Air Gap with a Holley and a stock type air cleaner. I get a little rubbing from the hood pad. Other than that, it fits fine. This has been discussed on other threads and you may want to search for it. Good luck.

The problem with the edelbrock carb, if it has an electric choke is that your drop base air cleaner choices are limited. You may have to go to a Rochester or a Holley.
