howards cams

510991-08
Has anyone ever used this cam before? I have a .030 over 455 9.75 to 1 compression, th400, 2000 stall and 3.08 gears, and power brakes.

Cam specs :
Duration @.050 221 intake /221 exhaust
.501 intake/.501 exhaust
108lsa

I'm going to pull the heads off this winter and do some porting and convert the standard rockers to rollers, I might mill the heads to 10.1 to 1. I also want to fill the exhaust crossover and mill the exhaust manifold crossover flush. I work at a machine shop so all of the machine work can be done for free I'm just asking if this would be a worthwhile upgrade from the stock w30 cam and stock rocker arms

Any input is appreciated

Thanks, sbceater

My heads are c heads big valves I don't know anything about the heads as far as the valves and springs go, besides the fact that they are stiffer springs.

It should work well, might nose over a bit early but should have plenty of low and mid-range power. If you go to more compression you might want to consider a slightly larger cam, like the Howard's 281/287.

I'm just unsure of the spring pressure and I don't know how much lift I can put in there without having major problems lol

You will have to get your spring set up checked. If you are taking the heads off anyway, just have a competent shop check for spring pressure and max safe lift. There is a good chance they might have to be changed. But that's how this works.

Correct.
But with stock heads I'd use something with a bit more off the seat time, especially if you're going to mill them to get 10.0:1.
I'd do an Erson Hi Flow 1. It's 228/228@.050 on a 110. That'll give you strong midrange and works with stock type valvetrains.

I know those guys pretty well at Howard's/Competition Products up there in Madison WI. I visited their QC lad a few years ago - they really to to extremes in the post machining QC process to make sure the cam is manufactured to spec.

I wonder how I got a cam with .003 run out and it ate the beaings ., I got it from howards., Eseentially they blamed me and they wouldn't even give me a t shirt despite the fact I had to take the engine back apart new cam bearings gaskets. Some how I never got a straight answer. And they repaired it even though I specifically told them not to. I was going to put it back on the lathe and measure it because they claimed less run out. That was my experience. I later used that cam to practice degreeing cams and it was on a 1.5 ratio not 1.6

Sorry you had a bad experience. I still stand behind what I say - the company I own sells thousands of camshafts per month to professional engine rebuilders. We do site surveys of all the manufacturers such as CMC, EPC (actually grinders - almost all cam blanks are cast by two foundries in the North). Howard's - for it's niche - does a pretty good job. If still not satisfied, call Robert Lou up there at Comp Products and see if you can get your problem resolved.

That's long been hashed out I guess. Still kinda pissed but is what it is. I got a cam I can use but I'm not putting in anything I'm dropping big coin on. I went with lunati.
