Engine ID Help

Hello everyone.
I am a proud new owner of a 1967 Cutlass Supreme, my first Olds.

The engine is not the original, and I am having a heck of a time identifying her.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks!

It is the 400 heads and the manifolds are the 400's as well.
Since it has an aftermarket intake I am going to say you may have a 1967 Cutlass Supreme with the Turnpike Cruiser(400 w/2bl Carb) option.
Is there a turbo400 trans?
Look for the tag on the trans.
There are numbers and a letter cast into the block just ahead of the thermostat housing, what are they?

As Mike said, you have a 1967 Olds 400, with a 10.25:1 compression ratio, which would have been sold with a 2bbl carb, so not a 4-4-2 motor, probably a Turnpike Cruiser motor.

Nothing wrong with having that mill in a '67.

Are you sure it's not original?

Wait a second... did the turnpike cruiser use the V coded heads? Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought only the 442 application used the V in the application code stamped into the head.

I looked closer at the engine pictures. I don't see the oil fill tube, it looks like the previous owner plugged it. Then it has the alternator bracket for an AC car but this is a non-AC car. It does look to me like something may have been swapped.

I'd encourage you to replace the oil fill tube. Several members here including myself have extras of these.

4bbl - 4-4-2 or police - was V______G.

2bbl was V______.

Of course, that really only positively identifies the right-side head.

So you have the earlier "E" block 400. It is slightly less amenable to making maximum power with a performance rebuild, but is also the rarer of the two 400 blocks.

The transmission tag should be about an inch by 2½", on the right side of the transmission, just above the oil pan, and is usually completely covered with crud.

The OH is the proper transmission for a 1967 F-85 with a 400 and a 2bbl carburetor.

???? The E is the best of the *three* 400 engines. And correct for a '67 Turnpike Cruiser. Are you thinking about the '65 389298 B 400?
