edlebrook performer with stock air cleaner ?

I am in the process of swapping out my 330 to 455 in my 67 Cutlass.
My 455 has an Edlebook 455 performer intake and edlebrook carb,
My question is will this setup clear my hood with the stock 67 air cleaner ?

You may not be able to use the stock air cleaner and the E-brock carb as the electric choke may interfere. You may have to go to a drop base open element style. You should be able to use your stock hood.

No electric choke on mine.
There must be someone on the board with this setup.
I want to keep it as stock looking as possible.
I even ground off the edlebrook lettering off the manifold.

With a performer it should work. There was a member who had the same setup as yours but he doesn't come around anymore.

You may have to remove the insulation blanket if you have one. This will come in contact with the air cleaner and work it over pretty much like a scouring pad.

If you have to go to an open element. Check out Edelbrock 1223 air element. Black matte powder coat with silk screened Edelbrock logo. I've got a repro 350 decal on the top and it covers completely. Looks good. Just an option.

We've got a 750 on a 425 and the stock air cleaner fits fine on a 67. Now if we can just find a 13.5x2.5 element.....

I have a friend with a 67,455 with a Q-jet. He was able to fit a 14 open element air filter with a little room to spare.

Guys the carb is not the issue...It's the 455 performer intake.
It measures about 2 1/2" higher then the stock one on my 330

Like I said it should clear the hood (not by much) but not the insulation blanket.

The Corvette air cleaner actually sits around the carb. The top is about an inch from the top of the carb. Could be your answer. If you look at a Vette from the side, the carb sticks up past the hood/fender. The air cleaner was designed by Duntov. It will flow well over 1000 cfm.

Thanks...I ordered a plain old chrome 14" low profile recessed air cleaner from Summit last night.
Just was hoping for the "Stock Look"

I spent yesterday trying to solve the problem you have I am installing a 455 in a 67 too. the engine came with the car and I know for a fact the aircleaner will hit unless a thin one is used. getting the valvecover off with powerbrakes is an issue to. I ordered 68 455 frame mounts and they have a lower bolt hole and I thought problem solved.WRONG . the rubber mount hits the frame before it gets to the holes the frame on a 68-72 must be wider than a 67. so after confering with my technicle assisitant (Bud Wiser and 6 of his friends) I have come to the conclusion that the only way to lower this engine is to machine the pads on the side of the engine to make the engine narrower the bolt holes are over an inch deep so thats not a problem but I am concerned that other problems will show up later (such as headers) I know this is not a option for you because yours is done but I have spent a lot of time working on this issue and other than making mounts I have not been able to come up with a better solution maybe someone else has a better idea

Granted I have BBC in mine, this is the aircleaner I'm using on my car. Please note, it will not work with an Edelbrock carb. Which performer manifold are you using?

I have looked into various air cleaners and what is avaible and a corvette or z/28 part will still be nessary even with the engine lowered but I would still like to get that engine lower in the frame if at all possible its real easy now when the frame and the body are seperated

I'm assuming that the 455 your putting in or that is in has a higher than stock intake? A bone stock 455 will fit under the hood but as soon as you start adding height the options become limited unfortunately. If you lower the engine, everything behind and in front will be lower too (Transmission, Fan etc.). You may have oil pan clearance issues and exhaust manifold issues. Not sure how far you need to lower it. Other issues may outweigh the benefit. You may have already taken these into consideration. There are notched stock valve covers for the power brake issue. It's never easy, that's what makes it fun. Good luck.

your right solving problems is the best part of it (most self imposed) I dont have to go far but I would like to get the deck hight the same as a 67 400 getting close to the frame is not a problem no steering linkage issues its the headers that concern me but all out performance is not the final issue I can dimple a tube if nessary

If I'm not mistaken, the deck height between the 455 and 400 are the same. Basically same block different bore. The manifold you have might be different?
I had to get a fiberglass hood to solve my problem.

The stock air cleaner will not fit with edlebrook intake.
I ordered a plain old 14" chrome from summit and had to get a shorter air filter.
Also my aftermarket chrome valve covers would'nt clear the brake booster,
soo I had to make a small "dimple" with a small pipe.
Worked fine and you can't see it because the booster is covering it.

Used stock 330 engine mounts from rock auto.

Oh, i thought the 455 and 350 were the same dimensions on the outside?

Or is it the height of the motor mounts?

Either way, i'm really happy with my setup, she's nice and peppy with some low end torque.

Yes....unfortunatly without the stock air cleaner.
Got a plain old Summit 14" round with a shorter filter.
I am putting a "442" pie tin on it to look a little more "factory"
Now I'm having major fuel issues...making a new post for that now

I have the performer intake on a 455 in my 67 and running a qjet carb, using a big block Chev drop base for the open element air cleaner with the factory top. I actually took out an inner fender so I could check it prior to being done. It clears by about 1 1/2 inches. I also found a short air filter and no hood insulation with a K&N filter top works well too.

My 77' has a bb 455 in it with a Edelbrock Performer intake and Q-Jet up from the stock 403 sb, and hood clearance is tight with the lower 403 air intake. Like this intake, as lower than most, and I modified it for dual 4" hosed fresh air. Don't much care for open intakes that take in hot underhood air. Plus, nobody hears me coming.

Try the drop base and filter you have coming with the OE top. I tried that on my car and it worked. I don't have a BB but I am used a Performer RPM which is taller. You don't know till you try.
