what have we here

started to clean up the crank i got with my 455 block an noticed some holes drilled 4 of them the first ones filld to the top with weld the seconds empty but runs fairly deep the thirds about 3/4 filled wth weld and the forth ones drilled about half way in all four are in a row to the left side of the crank.. i know this has to do with balance obviously but why and when would someone do this?

You are correct. This was done during the ballance process. Those are from heavy metal slugs, not weld. It's pretty expensive. If your not going to use the same pistons, balancer, and flexplate, you should have it reballanced anyway.
