Timeing ?

i have a 69 455 motor.....my question is when adjusting the timeing moving the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise which way is advancing it or retarding it?......also has anyone had a problem with squealing belts? what would be a remedy ( i have changed the belts befor but the squealing slowly came back)

Thanks

Turn the distributor clockwise to advance. Try some belt dressing or WD40. Make sure ther tight, and maybe if there old, and glazed, may need new ones.

We used to use hand soap on the belts if they squealed. Worked in the sixties probably will work now. IMO WD40 will make the belts slip, yes?

The proper way to adjust timing is with a light and you will see the results of turning the distributer one way or the other. Typically advancing increases idle speed while retarding it does the opposite. As for lubricant on the belts I am thinking it only quiets them and does not eliminate slipping which is the cause of the noise. Pulleys get smooth so you can try roughing them up with some coarse sand paper.

Don't soak the belt with WD40, just a light spray on the pulley, and it stops right away. I have done this many times, and belt does dot slip. Just be carefull not to get you hand in the fan.
