Carburetor

I have an Edlebrook carburetor on my 455. The engine came with it. I am leaning towards the carburtor is not functioning properly. First of all the timing and dwell are set correctly. I replace the spark plugs and wires and still the plugs are turning black as if the fuel air mixture is too rich. I have attempted to adjust the fuel mixture but still it appears to be flooding out at times and it is burning a lot of gasoline just idleing. you can smell the fuel mixture being too rich but no matter what adjustment I make the vapor is very strong. So my question here is when can one determine that the carburetor is bad? any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would say it's too high possibly covering the internal air bleeds.

I was thinking a heavy float, sitting low, leading to a high fuel level, but I'm not familiar with the details of this particular carb. Sounds like you know where the weak points are.

Gunk in the needle/seat.

Poor float adjustment per MD and cutlassefi.

Leaky float.
