1960 olds 394 heat riser operation

Hey guys - Seemed like the right place ot post this.

1960 oldsmobile 394

Im trying to figure out if my heat riser is stuck open (doubtful) or closed.

I was able to get a picture of the weight, springs etc of it.

Hopefully on of you know what direction is what.

Thanks in advanced!

did some research, that position is closed while when the weight is down its open. I want it permantly open correct?

My understanding is you want the weight down. You just have to make sure that when you move the weight, it's not just spinning on the shaft and that the shaft is actually turning.

Yes, you want it permanently open, may have some drivability issues when engine is cold, but the trade off is worth it.

I've got one in pieces off a 1959. I thought I was gently tapping it off the three bolts with a small hammer. I broke it in half. But the flapper is in good shape. Maybe the two pieces could be brazed together? Yours for shipping costs from Oregon if you want to mess with it. The flapper moved freely before I broke the cast iron surround.
