I just bought a 64 cutlass with a 425. The headers on it had to be dented around the steer shaft and the upper A arms. Do they make headers that fit a 64?

 

The frames in the 64-67 cars are slighly narrower than on the 68-72 cars. I'm guessing that whoever installed those headers used the later headers, which are much more readily available. The best fitting headers for the early cars are Kooks, now sold by Dick Miller. They are not cheap.

 

Thanks for the info. I thought maybe the frame was different in a 64 since they didn't have the big block until 65. Do you know if the the 64 & 65 have the same frame?

Sounds like a nice project. Is it complete or do you have some work to do other then the headers?

 

If the headers are in and not too mangled, I'd leave em in. Those suck to put headers in, and you'd just ruin another new set of cheap-o's.

Custom Kooks, or dented cheap are the only 2 options that I know of in those cars.

 

64-67 frames are virtually identical in this area. The minor changes have nothing to do with the location of the engine or the steering shaft. Unlike Chevy or Ford, the Olds big and small blocks use a common architecture. The only fundamental external difference is the deck height. No changes to the frame were required or made.

The body is clean. It was running Hot and overheated on me pretty good 250 degrees, so Im in the process of going through the motor.Sending the block off to be checked for cracks and i will reassemble if good. It had the 64 330 radiator and drivers side water pump on it, wich might have something to do with it! I will probally go with a aluminum rad and the 425 water pump with a cavitation plate on the back of the propeller. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good radiator for this car?

 

I don't know about today's headers but back in '78-79 (?) I could not find headers to fit my '66 Starfire. I remember it well because I talked on the phone with Bob Gerometta from OCA. That was big time for a 17 y/o. I tried his first suggestion and they didn't work. But since I specifically requested these headers be ordered for this app, the speed shop wouldn't take them back. So I had to eat them. I was then directed to this new guy that made custom headers. Some company called 'Headers by Ed'. Because of the cost and risk I decided not to put headers on my Starfire.

 

I canned my headers and replaced them with factory W-30 cast iron manifolds.
For a mild street engine, why fight the leaks and problems.

I got a driver quality set of W-30 manifolds for $100.00

I remember that I had to cut some off the driver side lower control arm mount. Also some adjustments on a couple of tube, but nothing major. I had used the number 2261 motor mounts which seam to keep the block pretty high. With a nice 2.5" exhaust sys and it should run pretty hard.

64-67 should all be the same as far as what you are looking to see.

 

I'm just looking for dif ideas. I like what you did with the front brakes.
A buddy of mine works at a corvette/Camaro junkyard rebuiling LS engines. A lot of those parts are easy for me to get. What spindles did you use.

 

I Have Hookers in my 67, but on the 64 post I am seriously thinking about W-Z's and get some porting work done and forget headers.
