Weird place for an oil leak
I'm putting together a 455 and I thought I was about ready to install my engine. I made me a pre-oiler out of an old HEI and started pumping oil through the motor and I have a leak. Oil is coming out the rear holes in the front stiffening plates that are spot welded to the pan for the 2 front 5/16 corner bolts. I've ordered a new pan gasket but I was hoping someone here could clue me in on what I missed during assembly. It just seemed strange that it would leak from both sides at that location.

It shouldn't leak. But stuff happens. If you have to do this again, use the diesel oil pan gasket. Part # OS30471C. It has a metal inner surrounded by...gasket material. Not cork. Most Olds guys consider this one a better gasket for the modern Olds V8 engines, big or small 1964+ and up.

A Hodge-bodge of misinformation on the Internet. One site says this, another says that, some say nothing at all. Some even say cork when in fact, the seal is not cork but neoprene, instead. Even RA has this gasket description listed incorrectly. There is no cork in this gasket.
This is the one I ordered from RA and the one I received from RA. The side pieces are black neoprene rubber with a full metal interior. Rubber end-pieces are identical to all other types.

Yes, I used silicone at the corners. I've replaced the oil pan on the engine currently in the car and never experienced this before. Its the leak under oil pressure out of those two holes that has me stumped.
