valve springs

I was stripping down a set of C heads and found that one head has single exhaust springs and double intake ones, the other is all double springs, I thought this was weird. Then I found the one with all doubles was certainly taken apart before because the valve seals were newer. I am wondering what springs I should put where, I am taking J heads off the 73 455 to put the C's on. The J springs are all single, should I use all the singles on the C's to match what the cam had before or should I have some of them as double springs.
I appreciate any information I can get

are you sure they are double ? or are they single with a damper in the center.
A double spring has a coil of inner and outer.
A single spring can have nothing in the center or a flat spring steel inner as a damper.

Boy do I feel stupid now, I get what you mean, I completely forgot that, Im fairly new to this and haven't fully had every thing sink in. I appreciate the information Gene. So they are not double springs they just have the inner damper. So what should I do, does it matter that the original heads did not have them? Which springs should I go with here? Thanks again

Depending what year C's you have, they don't all take the same installed height spring vs J's. I'd recommend taking the heads to your local machine shop and not doing it yourself at this point.

Well I don't have a nearby shop that I have heard good things from, in the case of the dampers in the middle, will they have any effect whether they are there or not? Its just a stock 455.

So what is the down side to the op sticking these C heads with dampeners on a 1973 engine?I am not saying to change the springs off the j heads to the c heads!
