Valve seat in C head
Valve seat in C head
Are the valve seats in a C head removable or have to be cut out to replace? Looking at possibly replacing intake and exhaust seat. Just curious on process to replace. Machine shops here too high if could replace myself I would and then just let them do the valve job.

Note that even heads with pressed-in seats require special tools to R&R them.
Hey Terry,
I got your email about your project, and your fund raiser. I wish you a lot of luck in your restoration. I have a couple suggestions for you.
1) You may want to solicite a rebuilder type of magazine or TV show that would be willing to fund a portion of your project.
2) You could aproach it differently, like have a big corporation fund this project for publicity, possibly auction, or raffle the completed car off, and give the proceeds to The american Cancer Society.
3) You may want to consider having a woman, such as your mom, be the chair person of the fund raising operation. She would have much better success rate of soliciting funds.
4) If you were just planning on raising the money to fix up your father's dream car, just so you could reap the benefits of, being able to enjoy this car yourself... that seem rather presumptuous and selfish. Many of the guys on here wish they could have $20,000 to restore their cars, and many of us have lost a parent or loved one to cancer. Cancer has taken both my parents from me.
Anyway Tery, I'm not trying to bust your *****, in fact, I would like to help you. I would be willing to donate my time to do your valve job for you. I charge $275 for that service. You will supply all the parts. I have a machine shop I work with that can help with other services that I can't do right now like seats or guides. This is their pricing copied from another thread -
Machine shop fees
I stopped by my local machine shop today on my way home from work and talked with Dave from Dixon Automotive in Gurnee. Their phone # is 847-244-2235. Real good guys with a bit of knowledge on Oldsmobile's. He helped me put together this basic price sheet which is kind of rough. They usually price out complete jobs and it's specific to each build. So I asked him for very basic charges pertaining to an Olds V-8. They do not have a set hourly rate and I'm sure there's many add-ons possible.
1) Install new valve guides $20 for the 1st one $7 for each additional plus parts
2) Install new seats $40 for the 1st one $8 for each additional plus parts
3) Clean/ check for cracks one pair of heads $50
4) Resurface head $80/ pair add $30 for extra material to be removed
5) Complete 3 angle performance valve job $375/ pair plus parts
6) Clean block, deck, install cam bearings/ freeze plugs, bore, hone $269 plus parts
7) Polish crank $55
8) Resize rods, R&R pistons, new ARP bolts $300 plus parts
9) Assemble complete stock type built engine carb to pan $850, for a performance build that requires multiple fittings the charge would be more.
I asked about grinding cranks/ offset/ stroker they out source that as well as balancing and line boring or line honing. These guys are a very small family owned operation. They stay busy and have delivered for me in the past. Does anyone else want to post up what they pay for machine shop services?
If you would like me to do any porting or other services on your heads, I would be happy to give you a fair price. Please send me a PM if your interested and I will give you my phone number so we can talk directly.
