Tools for setting the timing
Tools for setting the timing
Hi Oldsmobile fans... I want to work on my 1968 Delmont (455 w/ 4 bbl QJet) next week and was hoping that I might get some advice on what tools I need to set the timing. I am a novice, but keep learning through various experiences I have with my Olds. Regarding tools for setting the timing, is there a recommended timing light? I do not have a tach, but do have a dwell meter. I have seen timing lights with no frills, and some with several additional functions. So which to get?? And... any other tools necessary for my first attempt at setting/adjusting the timing? Thanks for any advice!!

Having a dwell meter is a big plus and a must have for point type distributors. Most have a built in tach with them. I have a dial back to zero timing light which can be helpful for checking total timing but it's not a must have item but it is a convenience. You can also have a timing tape for the balancer which would do the same thing with a cheaper light. If you're doing a new set of points you'll need a set of feeler gauges, screwdriver and a 9/16 wrench for the distributor hold down. Of course if you're going to spend all this money maybe it would be more cost effective to get a points eliminator kit from Pertronix, Crane, MSD, etc. Then you wouldn't have to worry about points again.
You will need the correct tool for adjusting the pts to set dwell (it's an allen wrench, or screwdriver at the end of flexible shaft with a plastic handle). The adjustment is thru the window on the dist cap. I like the the adjustable timing light because it's simple.
Before you do any of your dist work. I would check and /or replace spark plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, points, and condensor. If your pcv, air/ fuel filter has not been replaced in awhile, I would also consider those items. I would also inspect all my vacuum and fuel lines.
