Timing set problems after cam swap...

Guys... canīt set the initial Timing on a mild 455 to nearly 10-16 degr. after a cam swap.

Old cam was the Cam Comp cam 260H (not Xtreme Energy)- the new was one stepper higher 268H with cloyes timing chain in combination with a new harmonic balancer : http://professional-products.com/har...armonic-damper

The old and the new cam was degree and break in.
Both cams are mild cams in the 212 to 218 degr. range
No vacuum leak.

Now the problem:
as i put the HEI Distr. in the same position in the engine like i do with the 260H, i canīt set the timing as i say above at 10-16 Initial.

The best what i handle was 25 deg. with vacuum can touch the intake.( SEE PIC @ TDC)- it run -not well but it run- but have heavy starting problems with this timing-

With the 260H i can set the Initial at 16deg. but vacuum can touch the firewall and no chance to get the 17 or more degr.

I try try to put the finger a few position clockwise and c.clockwise to see if it helps but i canīt the engine run smooth & get the correct readings ...so whats wrong here.

How i can handle it to set the timing in 10 deg. area ?

New 268H cam -
Initial 25deg.-
TDC -
Red mark at firewall was the finger position with old cam!

Remove the hold down bolt and clamp. Lift the distributor, turn the rotor 1 tooth counter clockwise and reinstall.

Start from square one.
Turn the engine to TDC by hand then install the distributor so it’s pointing at cylinder 1. Cylinder 1 is driver side closest to you when you’re standing in front of it. It will be dead obvious when you have it in right. There is a Ford setting and an Olds setting on some timing sets but if you said you were able to degree it then you got it right.

Okay , i position the HEI one toth counter clockwise ( engine donīt start)
Than i position the ignition cable one position counter clockwise like the pic
- Engine start but i canīt become more than 12 degr initial timing because vacuum can hit the firewall.
Engine run, but not perfect...seems engine need more .

12 deg- with vac. can hit the firewall

is this normal ?

How can i now handle to come in 15- 20 degr area?

You need to pull the distributor again and rotate the shaft 1 more tooth CCW and reinstall. Then rotate the distributor body CCW to the new position.

Or just reorganize the wires each one terminal over counter clockwise in order. You need about another 10 degrees of advance.
