Timing set alignment 1967 400….dumb question...

Hi Guys,
I've been out of the motor building world for 5 + years.

I'm putting together an E code 400 that I've had sitting around in pieces for a long, long time.

Ready to install my cloyes timing set…..
If I understand correctly:
Set number one cylinder to TDC compression. To me this means that the lifters will be resting on the back of the Cam (cylinder #1) and piston #1 and #6 will be TDC in cylinder.
When everything is in this position- I want to install the gears so the cam dot is in down position (6 o'clock) and the crank dot is up (12 o'clock).
The way I have it assembled right now is- at TDC compression the cam dot is a 12 o'clock and crank is at 12 o'clock. Just doesn't sound right for some reason. Easy to fix in that everything is wide open.
I worry about getting things 180 degrees off (did it 30 years ago in high school…wasn't very fun).

Just trying to avoid any moron moves….sometimes its the simple stuff that kills you.

Thanks for any guidance.

Mike

With #1 @ TDC, both dots go in the 12 o'clock position.

Cam 12:00 and crank 12:00 will get you TDC compression on #1.

Cam 6:00 and crank 12:00 will get you TDC compression on #6.

Your choice.

Both will get you tdc. It's whether or not one or the other is on overlap or compression.

I should have been more clear. I meant, TDC compression on #1 or on #6.

Edited.

As my old teacher used to say ... there are no dumb questions ... but there are some really smart questions asked by some really dumb people.
