Throttle Cable Recommendation
Throttle Cable Recommendation
Need a throttle cable for my '68 442 that will fit a Holley 4150. I already have the throttle bracket (GM square mount). Lokar alone has dozens of options and I can't tell for sure what the right way to go is.
You almost always have to cobble something together regardless.
The lokar stuff is great - I run it - but there's a bunch of gotchas.
There's a bunch of choices due to material for the housing. Use Lokar's catalog - it's much easier to read. Just pick whether you want black plastic, regular stainless, or black stainless. The 24" cable is plenty long - you end up cutting off about 6". They also have different part numbers for kits with different connector ends. The Blow Drive one works really well with the stock qjet throttle nubbin. Their standard throttle cable part number uses the snap-on connector that most carbs use with a round nubbin.
They mount using a threaded housing and nut. You can make that work with the traditional GM mounts by using some large washers.
You have to trim the inner cable. It'll fray badly if you just cut it. I cut it using aceytelene. Just hang the part of the cable you're keeping and burn off the part you don't want. The torch will weld the loose ends together.
The throttle pedal end is just a ferrule. I put a small nut (#8?) on the inner cable so the stock throttle pedal bushing holds it securely.
The outer housing ferrule just slips into the mounting nut - so it can also just slip out. I had lots of problems with cables that go completely slack like a TH350 kickdown. Throttle cables usually have some tension on them so it's less of a problem. But I always drill and thread a hole in the side of the mount for the ferrule for a set screw to hold it in place.
