Starter motor issue ?? 455

Hi All, ive had this problem for like 9 years to long, the motor is a 1969 455 + 40 start up is fine, when it gets to operating temperature and gets shut off its a flip of a coin sometimes it will fire right up and sometimes it will turn over like its trying to start a big diesel engine extremely slow like it almost wont start ?? i have heard of this thing called heat soak maybe this is it maybe not, i have had this power master starter motor in there for the 9 years the car only has about 1000 miles on it, we don't even cruise with the car pretty much just goes to the track, i have no problem taking it out just want to go in the right direction, iam still thinking of getting the same one maybe the one i bought was not right from the beginning, any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks all john....

I would do a load test and see what the voltage drop is when trying to start the hot engine. You may have bad, corroded, or too small cables. Timing may be too far advanced.

Yes. Check the voltage where the battery cable connects to the starter and also where the purple starter solenoid wire connects.

Timing was set when the motor was dyno 2 weeks ago 12 degrees, its a new motor, the starter however is the old one the powermaster, the car has pretty much new cables battery etc etc, its all stock, right down to the black GM coil, stock wires also, VC455 the purple wire your talking about is that one on the positive side ?? when i put the motor in i remember that wire was the factory connector i need to see how good that connector is.. john..

There are typically three connections on a Powermaster solenoid, Battery, Motor, and Switch. The factory, 12-gauge purple wire connects to the Switch terminal.

Actually there are only 2 connections, battery and the switch (S terminal purple wire), the starter motor is prewired on the the starter.
