Mini Starter Recommendations for 455 Build

Hello All! Looking for recommendations on a mini starter choice for my new 455 build. I will be running headers and it seems like the mini starter is the way to go. I have been looking at the Powermaster 9610 or 9510 no sure which would be the best to go with. Open to other options as well. Motor will be 9.7 to 1 to 10.1 to 1 and somewhere between 450 475hp.

Im using the power master 9510 on my 9.6:1 455 and it has no problem spinning it over .Its only been on there for a year. Time will tell .Ive had one on my stock 350 for three years with no issues. Didn't need to use shims on either one .Not sure what the difference is with a 9610 (i think maybe more clocking positions).

I like the Powermaster products, in most cases the 9610 is plenty powerful. The difference between the 2 is supposedly the 9510 has a bit more power output and about $30 in cost. I bought into that and went with XS starter on my BB. Its been on there for about 5 years now.

I’m also using the Powermaster 9510 on my 455, which is a gear reduction starter. Did not require any shims. Also no more hard start, or no start, when hot.

Thanks to all for the replies. I think I will go with the Powermaster 9510. I’m still running my points distributor so I think I have to install an extra wiring kit as well. Does anyone know anything about the extra wiring kit?

I think it’s called an r wire kit I installed one on mine while I was still running points and had no issues with it .if I remember correctly I was some sort of inline diode in the r wire . there are other guys here who may have a better answer

The summit brand works great. Power master is local to me but the summit brand is affordable and very reliable. I bought it because a friend of mine has had his for 10 year.

I like the RobbMc and even have an extra. If you will be running high compression, the optional nose support is a good idea.

I have the power master 9510. be running it for almost 18 years. been great, never a problem.
