Roller Lifters vs Int Gasket

Need feedback on using the factory "tin" intake gasket with a retro-hyd roller setup, appears all 16 lifters hit the gasket??

This is a 100% stock-appearing build on a '71 455".

Customer wants heat-crossover to remain functional.

Thinking just use the aftermarket pieces w/o the "tin"??

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Also, does the heat choke tube bolted into the heat passage get painted the engine color??

I had the same problem with mine. My engine builder just removed the stock 'turkey tray' and used separate Fel Pro intakes on my 455.

I never thought of this... I have yet to put the intake on my engine. So the roller lifters hit the stock turkey tray?

Yes, mine were chattering and rubbing pretty bad. The tray was cracked in several spots over the middle set of lifters on both sides of the engine.

I don't think I had 30 miles on the motor when the 'ticking' I had been hearing wasn't from the rockers (adjusted the lash twice and still had a noise).
The cause of the 'ticking' was a loose crossover plug. In order to fix that, my builder and I pulled the intake and found the scratched and cracked tray.

I wish I would have taken pics, but at the time, I was more concerned that my new engine was toast.

turkey tray

Hi all. I am building a '71 455 also, and is the turkey tray really necessary? Wasn't it originally there for oil distribution? Or was it heat dissipation? sorry for the dumb question. Thanks.

me again. Couldn't you just trim the tin around the roller lifters for clearance? another dumb question! Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the tin pan is there to keep splashing oil from hitting the bottom of the intake manifold which is very hot because of the exhaust going thru it for the choke heat on a stock q jet. If you could trim it around the roller lifters that seems like would be the easiest way. Or you could make a sheet metal shield under the intake or eliminate the hot exhaust and use a electric choke???

Intake Gasket/Roller Lifters

After some careful checking there appears to be 2 options, first is to "window" the original style gasket, and the second is to install a "shield" on the intake itself.

We believe either method will work fine and are going forward with the original style gasket. It's an excellent fit as it is without any add'l side gaskets!

Appreciate all the replies and hopefully can get an answer about the painted choke tube??

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Here's a couple shots of both methods. The "shield" on the manifold in the photo has not been fastened yet but should be fine with 4 small "button-head" screws.

No "FAST" Class

Not on this build, it's a straight-forward engine build only!

Customer not overly concerned about HP. We will have it on the dyno in a week or two however!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Have been involved in the FAST program, and to be (seriously) competitive takes some really "deep pockets" without a doubt!
