Rocker Arm Adjustment

OK, I need some help. I want to know how to adjust the Rocker Arms in an olds 455? From what I have been able to find it sounds like you simply replace the push rod, the rockers, the rocker pivot, ensure that the lifters are down and tighten the rocker bolts to 25 ft -lbs. Is this correct? I have had issues with rocker arm adjustments on a chevy so I want to make sure I am doing this correctly.

Thanks in advance for the help

Olds valve train is not ajustable like Chevy. If you are just replacing one set, you should be OK. But if you had a valve job done and new cam, you need to check the lifter pre load. You make the addjustments buy shimming the pivots, or getting the correct push rods. It is not that hard, just not as easy as a Chevy. You can buy a adjustable rocker system, aftermarket for Olds

I am actually not replacing anything any of the valve system. I am just changing the head gaskets. So I had marked evrything and placed everything back from the place they came from. So I should be all set. Torque down to 25 ft-lbs, right? Thanks for the help.

Yes, just bolt it up and torque it to spec. Make sure you keep the rockers, and pivots and push rods, in the same location they are, don't mix them up, and you will be OK. You may want to check the pivots and rockers, for wear, and replace if needed?

Yup I laid everything out perfectly and everything should be back in its original location. The only issue I have is I broke one rocker pivot so that will be different. I would replace the entire valve train if I had the time but I need the car running in a week. I am getting married and I want my car in the pictures. I have plans to build up a motor with an extra block and heads I have laying around. Hopefully this winter. Thanks again for the help.

The reason you broke the pivot is you put it on with the cam lobe up. You should put the rocker set up on with the lobes down. Rotate the engine each time you put the rockers on with no presure on the springs.

Geno..

Funny you should reply to this now. Car ran great for about two months, had it in the pics for the wedding and everything looked awesome, I actually should post a couple so you guys can see. Unfortunately, I was driving it down to my buddies place in CT and had some god awful sounds from the engine. Took it apart yesterday and a rocker arm bolt broke. I am currently trying to get it out and I am going to buy an adjustable kit like mentioned before. Still trying to build my motor from the ground up
