Red vs. Black

How do you know if a red or black alternator cap is correct for your restoration. I have a 69 442 convert. original 400 ac car. Any wisdom out there?

It was an old person's car and hadn't been touched under the hood. It looked the same age as all the other 40plus year old stuff. I don't know why someone would bother to put it on there if it wasn't already there. - Steven

Thanks. That possibly clears things up for the Cutlass S. But! not sure it would be the same on a 442. Not sure why they even used two colors. Perhaps they knew in later years people would be scratching their heads asking why. They're probably having a good laugh @ our expense.

It seemed odd to me to find a positive terminal shrouded by a black cover. The 442 models could be different, maybe you could check with one of the aftermarket specialists, if there is an overpriced item to gouge some 442 owners with they will have it to sell you. The sad part is they gouge we lowly cutlass owners like it's the same dang car!

This is the kind of stuff that would keep me from doing a restoration. However, I admire your attention to detail. It would drive me crazy.
