rear main seal????

Well tonight I plasti gauge all the bearings on my 71 olds 455 and all is great!!

Now when it comes to the rear main seal im not so sure. Just by looking at it it looks like it will be right on the hash marks on the crank and I wanted to use the new rubber seal.....but I do have a new rope seal as well.

Will these gruves eat my seal or should I just use the old school rope seal??

I have done a few and never had any problems. Just be sure to put the tapered side to the back or the flywheel side. Just put it in and go for it.

I am with 64Rocket on that one, the 460 seal works great and if you could take the crank out and polish it by hand with crocus cloth on the grooves it would help but it should be ok though. I have run them many times without polishing off the grooves. NO LEAKS,

Your going to be fine scooter, I have never polished off the grooves and never leaked with the 460 seals and I have polished them with crocus but thats all and it doesnt remove enough metal to change anything. Get it together and let us know how its running, I have my engine still in the shop and I get it out next month and I will start a thread on my build. Good luck and look forward to your posts!!

I hope the picture in the beginning of this thread shows the correct orientation of the seal.
